IUD Q & A
What is an IUD?
IUDs are flexible, T-shaped devices that fit inside your uterus. Once your doctor has inserted it, they prevent pregnancy as effectively as sterilization does.
How do IUDs prevent pregnancy?
IUDs physically block sperm, stopping them from getting through the uterus to the fallopian tube, which is where they fertilize an egg. That’s not their primary mechanism of action, however. IUDs also contain hormones or copper to prevent pregnancy:
Hormone-containing IUDs
Some IUDs, such as Mirena®, slowly and continuously release hormones. The hormones change the lining of your uterus to prevent pregnancy. They also thicken mucus in your cervix, making it difficult for sperm to get through the opening.
The hormones in Mirena are safe because you receive a small amount. Mirena also contains progestin rather than estrogen, so it’s acceptable for women who can’t take estrogen.
Copper-containing IUD
Dr. Alizade offers Paragard®, which is the only copper-containing IUD currently available. Copper prevents pregnancy by acting as a spermicide and inhibiting sperm movement.
How long do IUDs last?
Mirena is effective for five years, then the hormones run out, and you need a new IUD. Paragard prevents pregnancy for 10 years. Of course, you don’t have to keep either IUD that long; you can ask Dr. Alizade to remove it at any time.
IUDs are known as long-lasting, reversible contraceptives for a good reason: They last many years, they’re as effective as sterilization, and they’re completely reversible.
It’s possible to get pregnant as soon as your IUD is removed, so if you’re not ready for that step, talk with Dr. Alizade about another form of birth control.
How is an IUD inserted?
Before inserting an IUD, Dr. Alizade measures the depth of your uterus and sets the IUD insertion tube to match that depth. Then, he inserts the tube containing the IUD through your cervix and into your uterus.
When the IUD is at the top of your uterus, he removes the insertion tube. Every IUD has a string attached to it that comes through the cervix.
Dr. Alizade trims the string so it reaches just below the cervical opening. You can reach into your vagina and feel the string — a physical sign your IUD is properly in place — but the string isn’t noticeable to your partner during intercourse.
